Wittering Running Success

The Station’s running club has scooped a host of titles this season. SAC Eddy Hewitt reports.

RAF Wittering has had a fantastic season in the athletics calendar, both for individuals and the team events. It has seen us win the Lincolnshire Road League season, which is an amazing achievement, especially when you consider the size of the camp compared to others in the League.

We had a very strong season leading the League for the majority of the way. However, in the latter stages, RAF Waddington managed to overtake us, proceeding into the last race with a lead of 387 points – surely they had it in the bag. However, with a great effort to field as many personnel as possible from all areas of Wittering, we managed to generate 60 runners and as a consequence were in with a fighting chance!

This combined with a number of strong performances, including those of Cpl Steve Robinson who finished second, SAC Eddy Hewitt fourth, Chf Tech Rowland seventh and Cpl Pete Norris ninth, meant Wittering scored 2,000 points compared to Waddington’s 1,300.

As a result we retained the title and smashed the opposition by 264 points. It should be noted that the reliability and commitment from the likes of SAC James Shaw and Chf Tech Mark Ellison who turned up for every single race, were key to the Station’s success. I’d personally like to thank each and every person who turned up throughout the season, as without your efforts we wouldn’t have been able to get our name back on that trophy!

We have also had successes in the RAF Championship events, some of which are very prestigious and have been around for over 50 years. RAF Wittering won the RAF Road Relays, RAF Benson 7-mile road race and Henlow 10-mile (both male and female). It is the first time in 26 years that RAF Wittering has won the Henlow 10 men’s title. Cpl Steve Robinson won both the Benson 7-mile and the Henlow 10 which got his name on the trophy alongside some international athletes. SAC Claire Forbes also secured her first RAF title at the Henlow 10 getting her name alongside some top athletes on the trophy.

Our work isn’t over yet though, as we now go into the cross country season for which I am hopeful we can carry on our success.
